Why use a Honeybadger tool?
Roughing opertaions are hard on tools. Whether it's crashing into clamps, bad tool offsets, or chip buildup, a $250 cutter body can go from pristine to trashed in a matter of seconds. Our tools are not designed for shops that have never crashed a tool, they are meant for the other 98% of machinists that get things done. We know that roughing tools live on that front line of abuse, and we believe our tools are the perfect blend of price to performance. Rather than slowing down to baby the tool, run it hard, have a backup on hand, and get the job done in less time. If it dies, we've got more.
What's up with the unusual tool diameter?
We start with a nominal diameter hardened 4140 steel blank, then cut the pockets so the inserts stand .025" proud per side from this to allow for chip clearance. This allows the tool to be chucked up short for rigidity, yet pulled out for extended reach when needed. It allows for a custom cutter overhang for every job, instead of locking it in when the tool is ordered. Typically, we run tools from 1:1 L/D to 5:1. For toolholder, we prefer a collet system for maximum versatility and rigidity, but a Weldon flat can be added to the tool as well for this style holder.
